The AQUA-GLASS™ Fiberglass Finish, Built Layer by Layer
The AQUA-GLASS™ fiberglass finish is the proprietary pool surface Aqua Creations developed and still installs only with its own crews. It is gun-laminated fiberglass, bonded to your existing shell over a vinyl ester barrier coat, in the color you choose.

Five layers, from your shell up to the surface you swim on
- 1The shell you already haveConcrete, gunite, or a plaster or pebble pool. It stays in place; nothing is torn out.
- 2A ground, repaired surfaceThe old finish is disk-ground to sound material and loose or hollow plaster is repaired.
- 3The vinyl ester barrier coatUnfilled and non-pigmented, part of the system since 1994. It bonds the laminate to the shell.
- 4Gun-laminated fiberglassApplied with chopper guns, about 30% more material than rolled-on methods.
- 5Your chosen colorThe smooth surface you see and touch, in a standard or custom color.
Why AQUA-GLASS™ is sprayed, not rolled
When Richard Dietz Sr. introduced AQUA-GLASS™ in 1991, most fiberglass pool work was rolled on by hand. He set out to build the most user-friendly, longest-lasting swimming pool surface, and that meant changing how the fiberglass went on.
Switch between the two methods to compare them point by point. In a chopper-gun spray-up, air pressure sprays chopped glass into a stream of catalyzed resin, as the Polymer Science Learning Center describes the process.

Rolled-on fiberglass
The method we replacedBy hand, with buckets and paint rollers.
The baseline. Whatever a rolled layer carries.
Weak bonds were the common problem with rolled-on pool work.
Poorly cured finishes, the other problem AQUA-GLASS™ was built to fix.
Gun-laminated AQUA-GLASS™
Our methodSprayed with fiberglass chopper guns by our in-house crews.
About 30% more than rolled-on methods.
Over a disk-ground, repaired surface and an unfilled, non-pigmented vinyl ester barrier coat.

Four AQUA-GLASS™ colors on finished pools
These are real pools, not renderings. Custom colors are available too, and every color looks different with water depth, sun, and the yard around it, so we go over finish colors with you at the estimate. Hotel, apartment, and HOA pools follow county rules on interior color, which generally call for white.

One company developed it, and one company installs it
Aqua Creations developed AQUA-GLASS™, and every job is ground, repaired, coated, and laminated by our own employees. We have never used subcontractors for this work, and the company counts more than 25 long-term employees.
That is how one standard of work carries across backyard pools, hotel pools, and HOA pools. Read more about the people behind the finish, or go deeper on why AQUA-GLASS™ performs differently.
Western Pool & Spa Show, 1996 through 2008
Aqua Creations was the only fiberglass resurfacing company to win it.
I am very impressed with the workmanship of Aqua Creations. It is so good to know that there are still honest hardworking companies around and I am so fortunate to be found and hired by Aqua Creations.
Caring for an AQUA-GLASS™ surface
A smooth fiberglass surface is easier to keep clean than etched plaster, but the water still needs looking after, for the swimmers as much as the finish. Test regularly, keep the sanitizer in range, and keep leaves and debris off the floor.
For the numbers, we point owners to public health guidance rather than our own rule of thumb. The CDC recommends a pH of 7.2 to 7.8 and a free chlorine level of at least 1 ppm in pools. Commercial pools follow their own local health department rules on top of that.
Planning the rest of the pool at the same time? Many owners resurface the pool and an attached spa together, and we lay the same finish in both. For routine care, see what maintenance a fiberglass pool surface needs.

About the AQUA-GLASS™ finish
What owners ask us about the finish itself, before they ask about price.
AQUA-GLASS™ is the finish behind every one of our pool resurfacing services. For how it is applied to an existing pool, see fiberglass pool resurfacing, or start with pool resurfacing if you are not sure what your pool needs.
No. The AQUA-GLASS™ fiberglass finish is a laminated system: the old surface is disk-ground, repairs are made, a vinyl ester barrier coat goes on, and fiberglass is laminated with chopper guns. It is a fiberglass layer bonded to your shell, not a film rolled over it.
Finished pools on this page show White, Aqua Pacific Blue, Iridium, and Granite, and custom colors are available. Color reads differently with depth, sun, and surroundings, so we go over finish colors with you at the estimate. Public pools follow county rules on interior color, which generally call for white.
Yes. Spas are resurfaced with the same AQUA-GLASS™ system, often in the same project as the pool, so the two match. See our spa resurfacing page for how that works.
Only Aqua Creations. The system was developed here, and every AQUA-GLASS™ job is done by our in-house crews. We have never handed this work to subcontractors.
Keep the water balanced and sanitized the way public health guidance describes, test it regularly, and keep debris off the floor.
