Pool Resurfacing in Brentwood, CA, North and South of Sunset

Aqua Creations handles pool resurfacing in Brentwood for homes on both sides of Sunset Boulevard, from Brentwood Glen up to Mandeville Canyon. Our own crews come down from our Ventura shop and finish each pool in AQUA-GLASS™ fiberglass, along with the spa, tile, and coping work that often comes with it.

One project, three jobs

A pool, two spas, and new tile in a single project

Plenty of Brentwood yards pair a pool with a spa, and older ones still carry their first waterline tile. One customer, not a Brentwood address, had all of it done together: new coping and waterline tile, plus AQUA-GLASS™ on two spas and the pool.

I cant stress how easy the process was. The entire team at Aqua Creations was knowledgeable, prompt, and very fast all while turning out a fantastic product. They replaced the coping, water line tile and put down their aqua glass finish in 2 spas and our pool. I would highly recommend them for any pool or spa refinish.

Local surface conditions

Mild Westside summers, steady sun, and soft-leaning water

Brentwood sits close enough to the ocean that summer stays mild. The UCLA weather station in neighboring Westwood averages an August high of 78.8°F. About 12 miles inland at downtown Los Angeles, it is 84°F. For a pool, that cooler summer means smaller day-to-day swings in water chemistry than inland pools see.

The sun still does its work. Plaster that has lost its smooth top layer fades and roughens faster in strong light, and canyon lots north of Sunset can collect leaves and debris from the slopes above. On a porous surface, that debris turns into stains.

Then there is the fill water. Water low in calcium can draw calcium out of cement-based plaster, which is part of why old plaster pools etch and turn rough. A fiberglass surface is not cement, so it has no calcium to give up.

Questions

What Brentwood pool owners ask before a resurface

Water, permits, draining, and getting a crew into the yard. Here are plain answers to the questions that come up most.

LADWP reports an average hardness of 103 mg/L for its Western Los Angeles area, and Brentwood is on that list. That counts as moderately hard, near the soft end of the range. Once a pool is refilled, its calcium level still needs testing and adjusting, and it creeps up over time as water evaporates and you top off.

A private pool at a single-family home is outside the Los Angeles County program that approves public pool work. Pools at apartments, condominiums, gated communities, and clubs are public pools, and their renovation plans go to the county Department of Public Health before work starts. We tell you which group your pool falls into at the estimate.

Inside the City of Los Angeles, LA Sanitation lets a home pool drain to the storm drain only at night, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., and only once chlorine is down to 0.1 mg/L or less. Salt and algaecides have limits too, so a saltwater pool needs a plan before the pump goes in.

Yes. An attached spa, the waterline tile, and the coping are all easier to reach while the pool is empty, so we scope them together at the estimate. The review above describes that same combination on one property.

It depends on the size of the pool and how much repair the shell needs. You get the schedule for your own pool at the estimate.

Housing and pool stock

Over half the homes in the Brentwood area went up between 1950 and 1979

City planning data for the Brentwood and Pacific Palisades area shows about 53 percent of homes were built from 1950 through 1979, and close to 18 percent before 1950. Only about 14 percent date from 2000 or later.

A pool built alongside a 1960s house has had decades of water, sun, and patching. A pool that old often has a floor that feels like sandpaper, color that has gone blotchy, and patches that sound hollow when tapped. Those hollow spots are old layers that have let go of the shell.

That is why the age of the pool matters now. Any new finish is only as sound as the shell under it, so hollow areas have to be cut out and repaired first.

On these older shells we apply AQUA-GLASS™ over the repaired surface; our fiberglass pool resurfacing page explains how it is built.
