Turn the city's hardness numbers into grains per gallon
The City of Buellton pumps four wells in the Buellton Uplands and the Santa Ynez River underflow, and adds State Water Project supply. Its 2025 report shows those two sources at opposite ends of the scale.
Pick a source, or type the number from your own test kit or a softener dealer's report. The tool converts it, places it on the standard hardness scale, and tells you what that water tends to do to plaster and to fiberglass.
Supply values: City of Buellton Consumer Confidence Report for 2025. Scale: 0 to 60 mg/L soft, 61 to 120 moderately hard, 121 to 180 hard, over 180 very hard (USGS). One grain per gallon is 17.1 mg/L.

Scale builds fast at the waterline and works into the pores as the cement etches, so the surface roughens sooner.

Scale still forms, mostly on the tile line, but a smooth nonporous face gives it little to grip. Keep the water balanced.

Buellton weather sits halfway between two climates
NOAA keeps no climate normals station in Buellton. The two nearest ones bracket it along the Santa Ynez River: Lompoc, about 15 miles west toward the ocean, and Cachuma Lake, about 12 miles east, inland of the mountains. Their normal August highs are 20 degrees apart.
Buellton pools get some of each. Summer afternoons run warmer than on the coast, which raises chlorine demand and speeds the chemistry swings that etch plaster. Winter nights run cooler. Neither is as hard on a finish as the fill water, though: at about 30 grains per gallon, the city's groundwater is the thing most likely to roughen a cement surface here.

A public pool's drain covers must meet the federal anti-entrapment standard, and a single drain that can be blocked needs a backup system. The pool stays closed from drain to refill, so guests or residents need notice.
