Pool Resurfacing in Huntington Beach, CA, for Beach Homes, HOAs, and Hotels

Aqua Creations brings pool resurfacing to Huntington Beach homes, HOA communities, and hotel pools, in a city where about 85 percent of the tap water is local groundwater. We drive down from our Ventura shop for each job, from the harbor neighborhoods to the tracts along Beach Boulevard.

Plaster or fiberglass

Replaster or AQUA-GLASS™ for a Huntington Beach pool

Most Huntington Beach pools were built with a plaster finish. The imported share of city water averaged 236 ppm hardness in 2025, and as a pool evaporates and gets topped off, that calcium builds a line at the tile. Here is how the two finishes compare for a pool on city water.

Plaster compared with AQUA-GLASS fiberglass for a Huntington Beach pool
QuestionPlasterAQUA-GLASS™ fiberglass
How it goes onTroweled on by hand as a cement-based coatSprayed with chopper guns over an unfilled vinyl ester barrier coat, with about 30 percent more material than rolled-on fiberglass
Fill water at 162 to 236 ppmA cement surface that reacts with the water chemistry, so scale and etching show up first at the waterline and stepsA laminated fiberglass surface rather than a cement one, so the water is not working on a plaster face
Feel underfootStarts smooth and roughens as it etchesA smooth laminated finish across floor, walls, and steps
Color on a backyard poolWhite or tinted plasterAQUA-GLASS™ custom colors, which we go over with you at the estimate
Color on an HOA or hotel poolFollows the county finish rulesFollows the county's approved finish list; no custom colors on public pools
Who applies itDepends on the contractorOur in-house crews, never subcontractors

If the table points you toward fiberglass, our fiberglass pool resurfacing page explains the method in full. Plaster still makes sense for some pools, and we will tell you so at the estimate when it does.

A Google review

Coping, tile, two spas, and a pool in one project

I cant stress how easy the process was. The entire team at Aqua Creations was knowledgeable, prompt, and very fast all while turning out a fantastic product. They replaced the coping, water line tile and put down their aqua glass finish in 2 spas and our pool. I would highly recommend them for any pool or spa refinish.

Where we work

From Huntington Harbour down to the river mouth

Our crews reach Huntington Beach on the 405 from Ventura, about 100 road miles and roughly two hours with clear traffic. Jobs take us from the waterfront homes of Huntington Harbour at the north end, through downtown around Main Street, to the neighborhoods on either side of Beach Boulevard and Goldenwest Street.

Homes along Pacific Coast Highway sit in the marine air off the beach, while the tracts north of the 405 are a few miles inland. Both are on the same city water.

Huntington Beach is one of the coastal towns in our Orange County service area. Next door, we also cover Newport Beach and Costa Mesa, and inland cities such as Garden Grove.

Permit path

Huntington Beach HOA and hotel pools go through the county, not the city

Public pools in Huntington Beach, including HOA, apartment, and hotel pools, are permitted by the Environmental Health Plan Check program at the Orange County Health Care Agency. Its replaster guidance applies to fiberglass resurfacing too.

A backyard pool at a single home is not a public pool and does not go through this plan check. We talk through what does apply to yours at the estimate.

  • One application per body of waterA community pool with a spa is two applications to the county, each with its own approval before work starts.
  • An inspection of the empty shellA county plan checker looks at the pool before the new surface goes on, and the drain covers have to be on site that day.
  • Drain covers that are still currentThe county notes that covers are generally rated for five years. Older or discontinued covers get replaced while the pool is empty.
  • Contrasting waterline tileThe county asks for waterline and trim tile in a color that contrasts with the shell, and recommends sending a tile sample first unless it is black or dark blue.
  • A final inspection and written approvalThe pool reopens only after a final inspection and written approval to operate. Each inspection may take up to 10 working days to book.
Huntington Beach water

Two sources, two hardness levels, one city system

The city’s 2026 Water Quality Report covers 2025. Local wells supplied about 85 percent of the water and averaged 162 ppm hardness, about 9.5 grains per gallon. The other 15 percent was treated water imported through the Metropolitan Water District, at 236 ppm, about 13.8 grains.

The well water is soft for Orange County, but neither source is free of minerals, and a pool concentrates them as it evaporates. On plaster, that shows as scale and etching. On AQUA-GLASS™ there is no cement face for the water to etch, though the water itself still needs balancing by whoever services the pool.
