Pool Resurfacing in Ojai, CA, for Hard Water and Hot Valley Summers
Aqua Creations handles pool resurfacing in Ojai from our shop in Ventura, a short drive down Highway 33, with in-house crews that never subcontract. Ojai pools face harder water and hotter summers than the coast, and the right finish is the one built for both.
A wet winter, then months of dry heat
Ojai sits inland from the ocean breeze, so its summers run hot and its winters bring most of the year's rain. Average highs climb from the mid 60s in December to 91°F in August, and most of the 21 inches of yearly rain falls between November and March.
For a pool, that pattern means two very different seasons. Winter brings runoff, leaves, and cold nights. Summer brings strong sun, warm water, fast chlorine loss, and constant top-offs. Weather also plays a part in project timing, since a drained shell sits open to wind and rain, and every finish has temperature and moisture limits while it cures. We set the calendar for your pool at the estimate.

Ojai pool conditions in numbers
Older homes, older pool surfaces
Ojai's housing is old. The city's own housing plan counts about 81 percent of its homes as built before 1980, and close to 45 percent before 1960.
Not every older home has a pool, and plenty of pools went in long after the house. Still, a valley full of mature homes means a lot of backyard pools that have been through several finishes, patch jobs, and decades of hard fill water.
That matters now because a worn surface and hard water feed each other. Rough plaster gives scale a place to grip, and scale makes the surface rougher. A resurfacing project on a pool like this starts with finding loose or hollow areas, so the new finish goes onto a sound shell. Our residential pool resurfacing page covers what that looks like for a backyard pool.
When Ojai's homes were built

- Etched, sandpaper texture that snags swimsuits and scrapes feet
- Gray or blotchy color where the old plaster has worn thin
- White crust and calcium nodules along the tile line and on steps
- Hollow-sounding spots that flake off when tapped
If you see these, our page on plaster, gunite, and pebble pool resurfacing explains your options.
What Ojai pool owners ask before they book
Water, permits, weather, and whether we cover your part of the valley. Ask us anything else when you call.
It is on the hard side. The Ojai Water System, run by Casitas Municipal Water District, reported an average hardness of 412 mg/L (about 24 grains per gallon) for 2025, with calcium at 119 mg/L. Every top-off in summer adds more of that calcium, so scale shows up first at the waterline tile and on rough plaster. Keeping pH and calcium in range matters more here than in a soft-water town.
It depends on the pool. A pool that serves more than three families, such as an HOA, inn, or apartment pool, falls under the Ventura County Environmental Health public pool program, which reviews resurfacing plans before work starts. A private backyard pool is outside that program. If your scope includes new plumbing, electrical, or deck work, ask us at the estimate whether the city or county building office needs to see it.
On red flag days, dry wind can carry ash, oak leaves, and grit into a pool. Wood ash is alkaline and pushes pH up, which feeds scale in hard water, and wet leaves left on plaster can leave tea-colored stains. While a shell is drained and open for work, wind and debris matter too, so it helps to talk about the forecast when you choose a start date.
Yes. We cover the whole Ojai Valley, from the East End and downtown out to Meiners Oaks, Mira Monte, and Oak View along Highway 33. Our Ventura shop is about 12 miles from downtown Ojai as the crow flies.
Not necessarily. Ojai nights get cold, with average lows near 33°F in December, and the days are short, so temperature is part of the scheduling talk for any finish. Many owners like the cooler months because the pool is not in daily use. We go over timing for your pool at the free estimate.
Inland heat, cold nights, and hard water on one surface
A coastal pool fights salt air and fog. An Ojai pool fights almost the opposite: dry heat, strong sun, a wide swing between day and night, and fill water heavy with calcium.
In August the average high is 91°F and the average low is about 54°F, a swing of more than 35 degrees in a day. Warm water speeds up chemical reactions, sunlight burns off chlorine, and evaporation leaves minerals behind every time the pool is topped off. With fill water at about 24 grains per gallon, the calcium has nowhere to go but onto the surface.
A smooth, nonporous surface does not stop hard water, but it gives scale far less to hold on to, and it is easier to brush clean. That is the case for fiberglass pool resurfacing on an inland pool, where our AQUA-GLASS™ finish is gun-laminated onto the prepared shell by our own crews.

From the East End to Meiners Oaks
Our crews come up Highway 33 from Ventura and work across the valley floor and the hillside lots above it. Estate lots with long drives and tight side yards are common here, so tell us about steps, slopes, or a narrow side yard when you call. Ojai is part of our Ventura County service area, along with nearby Ventura and Santa Paula.
