Pool Resurfacing in Newbury Park, CA, on the West End of the Conejo Valley
Pool resurfacing in Newbury Park means dealing with Santa Ana wind, Cal Am water, and pools from the 1960s and 1970s. Aqua Creations handles it with AQUA-GLASS™ fiberglass applied by our own crews from our Ventura shop, about 19 miles away.

California American Water, and the minerals left behind in every top-off
California American Water’s Ventura County District lists Newbury Park among the communities it serves, along with Thousand Oaks and Camarillo. Like the other retail agencies in the Conejo Valley, it buys imported water from Calleguas Municipal Water District. The Calleguas 2025 report puts its main supply at 140 mg/L total hardness, about 8.2 grains per gallon, and 297 mg/L total dissolved solids.
Dissolved solids are what stays in the pool when water evaporates. A windy, sunny yard loses water faster, and each top-off brings in another load of calcium and salts. Over a season the pool water becomes harder to keep in balance than the tap water you started with.
Plaster pays for that in both directions: scale settles on it when the water runs high, and the cement etches when the water swings low. Fiberglass still needs balanced water, but it is not a cement product for the water to dissolve. Your Cal Am annual report shows the delivered figures for your address.
How each finish handles a Newbury Park backyard
The same four pressures come up again and again on this end of the valley: mineral-heavy top-off water, wind-blown debris, chemistry swings, and strong sun. Here is how a plaster surface and a gun-laminated fiberglass surface respond to each.
| Newbury Park condition | Plaster | AQUA-GLASS™ fiberglass |
|---|---|---|
| Mineral buildup from frequent top-offs | Scale settles into the pores once the surface etches, and acid washing it off removes a little more plaster each time. | Scale mostly stays along the tile line, where it can be cleaned without wearing down the finish. |
| Oak leaves and grit after a wind event | Leaves left on a porous floor overnight can tea-stain it, and grit scuffs a surface that is already soft. | A smooth face lets the cleaner and a brush lift debris before it marks the surface. |
| Water that drifts out of balance | Low-calcium or low-pH water pulls calcium out of the cement, which is how plaster turns rough. | Not a cement product, so it does not lose material to aggressive water the way plaster does. |
| Color in full afternoon sun | Tinted plaster tends to fade unevenly and look blotchy as it ages. | AQUA-GLASS™ comes in custom colors for backyard pools, applied as one continuous finish. |
Price and lifespan depend on your pool, so we cover them at the estimate.
Santa Ana gusts and dry heat at the west end of the valley
When Santa Ana winds swept Ventura County on November 20, 2023, KCLU reported a 45 mph gust in Newbury Park, with 75 mph at Camarillo Airport down the grade. Wind like that does two things to a pool in a single afternoon. It drops leaves, dust, and grit into the water, and it pulls water off the surface faster than a calm day would.
The debris is the visible problem. On an etched plaster floor, oak leaves and dirt that sit overnight leave brown marks behind. The evaporation is the quiet one, because it concentrates the minerals described above and sends more fill water in after it.
Summer brings the other half. The nearest NOAA normals station, Camarillo Airport, about 8 miles west below the Conejo Grade, puts the 1991 to 2020 normal August high at 79.5°F. A pool in full afternoon sun warms up, burns through chlorine faster, and sees bigger chemistry swings. That steady swing is what slowly roughens a cement finish.

About the finishWaterline tile and coping
Scale from frequent top-offs builds at the tile line first. Replacing tile or coping is easiest while the pool is empty.
