Solvang sits in the Santa Ynez Valley between Buellton and Santa Ynez. Mission Drive, which is Highway 246, carries most traffic through the village. Alisal Road runs south out of town, and Atterdag Road heads north into the residential streets.

The City of Solvang 2024 water quality report lists its own wells at an average hardness of 616 ppm, with samples from 421 to 868 ppm. That is about 36 grains per gallon. The City also draws on ID No. 1 wells and State Water, which test softer, so your tap depends on the blend. Hard water leaves scale on plaster first, and a smooth fiberglass surface gives it less to hold.

A 32 by 16 foot rectangular pool that runs from 3.5 to 7 feet deep holds about 20,000 gallons, or about 27 hundred cubic feet on a water bill. The estimator on this page works it out for your own pool size and shape.
Usually it makes sense, since both are empty at the same time and the water only comes out once. We look at the spa, the coping, and the waterline tile at the estimate and you decide what to include.
Three sources, and the City wells are the hardest
The City of Solvang Water Division serves the city from its own groundwater wells, including river wells and upland wells, plus groundwater from the Santa Ynez River Water Conservation District, Improvement District No. 1, and State Water delivered through the Central Coast Water Authority. Its 2024 report lists each source separately and does not give a share for each.
Converted at 17.1 mg/L per grain, the City wells average about 36 grains per gallon, the ID No. 1 wells about 24, and State Water about 5. Even the softer blend leaves calcium behind as the pool evaporates.
On plaster, that calcium bonds into the pores and builds on rough spots. On AQUA-GLASS™, a nonporous laminate, there is far less for it to grip, so it mostly shows at the waterline tile where it can be cleaned off.
