Shared pools in Lompoc answer to County Environmental Health

A pool used by hotel guests, apartment residents, HOA members, or club members is a public pool under California rules, even when it sits behind a locked gate. Lompoc does not run a pool health program of its own, so these pools fall under the County of Santa Barbara’s Environmental Health Services. The county describes its recreational health program as the office that keeps public swimming facilities operating safely and in sanitary condition.

For a manager or board, that means a resurface is more than a contractor decision. Ask the county early what your project needs, so the pool is not held up when it is ready to reopen. We go over that step with you at the estimate.

Lompoc questions

What Lompoc owners ask before a resurface

Straight answers on water, permits, distance, and color.

The City of Lompoc’s 2025 Water Quality Report lists an average total hardness of 293 mg/L, with a range of 245 to 318. That is about 17 grains per gallon. The same report puts total dissolved solids at 817 mg/L, which adds up quickly in a pool that is topped off most of the year.

The report says the treatment plant uses softening, purification, and disinfection on water from the city’s ten wells. Even after treatment the hardness is still near 17 grains per gallon, so scale still collects at the tile line and on the steps. Customers on the small Frick Springs system in Miguelito Canyon get spring water that tested at 405 mg/L hardness.

Shared pools in Lompoc fall under the County of Santa Barbara’s Environmental Health Services. Contact the county before the pool closes so you know what the project requires. A backyard pool at a single-family home is not a public pool.

Yes. Lompoc is about 75 miles from our shop in a straight line, and it is one of the Santa Barbara County towns we list as a service area. The crew that works on your pool is our own, never a subcontractor.

Yes. AQUA-GLASS™ comes in custom colors for backyard pools, and we go over finish colors with you at the estimate. Public pools follow the health agency’s approved finish rules, so we do not offer custom colors on hotel, apartment, or HOA pools.

Not always. Cracks, blisters, or a worn patch can sometimes be repaired on their own. We look at the whole shell and tell you which one your pool needs.

Valley conditions

Mild summers, chilly winter nights, and the occasional frost

Lompoc sits on the floor of the Lompoc Valley, roughly ten miles inland from the ocean. NOAA normals for the Lompoc station put the average August high at 73.3 degrees, with September a little warmer at 74.8. January nights average 43.2 degrees, and the station records about four nights a year at or below freezing.

Mild water is easy on a pool surface, so in Lompoc the hard water does most of the damage. The climate matters in two places. A heated pool on hard water throws scale faster, because warm water holds less calcium than cool water. And on the few freezing nights, an aging plaster shell that is already cracked or hollow takes extra stress.

Rain averages about 15.4 inches a year and falls mostly in winter, so for most of the year the pool is topped off from the tap.
