Pool Resurfacing in Bel Air for Hillside Estate Pools

Aqua Creations provides pool resurfacing in Bel Air for hillside and canyon homes, from Bel Air Crest down to the gates along Sunset Boulevard. Our in-house crews resurface pools and spas in AQUA-GLASS™ fiberglass, and on a hillside lot, access is the first thing to sort out.

What the canyons and the sun do to a Bel Air pool

Bel Air climbs from Sunset Boulevard into the Santa Monica Mountains, along canyons like Stone Canyon and Roscomare. The UCLA weather station at the foot of the hills averages 17.7 inches of rain a year, compared with 14.3 inches downtown. When storms come through, runoff, mud, and leaves from the slopes above can end up in the pool.

Every one of those storms throws the water off. Rain dilutes the chemistry, debris feeds algae, and wet leaves leave brown tannin marks. On a smooth, sealed surface most of that brushes away. On old, porous plaster it settles in and stays.

Summer brings the opposite problem: long, dry months of sun. UV light and warm water speed up the chemistry that etches plaster, and pools on terraced lots often sit in full sun from morning to evening. A raised spa can be finished along with the pool; see spa resurfacing.

How a resurface runs

Drain to refill on a City of Los Angeles lot

Every Bel Air project moves through these four phases. The schedule depends on the size of the pool and the repairs the shell needs, and you get yours at the estimate. Our fiberglass pool resurfacing page explains the finish in more depth.

  1. DrainWe pump the pool down and go over the empty shell, wall by wall.
  2. PrepLoose or hollow plaster is cut out and repaired so the new surface bonds to sound material.
  3. FinishAQUA-GLASS™ goes on over the prepared shell, gun-laminated by our own crew.
  4. RefillFresh LADWP water goes in; test and balance it before the first swim.

Draining in the City of Los Angeles. LA Sanitation lets a home pool go to the storm drain between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. once its chlorine reads 0.1 mg/L or lower, and discharges of 100,000 gallons or more need 72 hours’ notice. Read LA Sanitation’s tips for pool owners.

Where we work

Pool resurfacing across Bel Air

Bel Air rises north from Sunset Boulevard toward Mulholland Drive, with the 405 and the Sepulveda Pass on its western side. Stone Canyon Road runs up past the Hotel Bel-Air, and the UCLA campus sits just below the hills.

We work throughout Bel Air Estates, Bel Air Crest, Roscomare Valley, and Beverly Glen, on everything from terraced estate pools to compact yards off the canyon roads.

Next door, we also resurface pools in Brentwood, west of the 405, and in Pacific Palisades along the coast. See every town on our Los Angeles County page.

Pool volume estimator

How much water is in your pool?

A resurface means draining the pool and filling it again. Enter rough measurements to see about how many gallons that is, and how long it takes to pump out.

Shape factors are approximate: a kidney or freeform pool holds less than a rectangle of the same length and width. Treat the result as a ballpark for planning, not a measurement.

34,400gallons, about
11.5hours to pump at 50 gallons a minute

Under 100,000 gallons, so LA Sanitation’s 72-hour notice rule does not apply.

Hotel, club, and condo pools in Bel Air

Bel Air is mostly houses; city planning data puts only about 10 percent of homes in multi-unit buildings. The shared pools here belong to hotels, clubs, schools, and the condo and apartment buildings near the edges of the area.

Hotels

For a hotel, the question is downtime. You get the expected schedule for your pool at the estimate, based on its size and the repairs it needs.

Clubs and schools

Heavy use and long swim seasons wear plaster fastest at steps, benches, and floors. See how we handle commercial pool resurfacing.

Condos and apartments

Residents want the pool back on time, and county approval comes before any work begins, so that step goes into the schedule from the start.

Who approves the work

Public pools in Los Angeles County answer to the Department of Public Health’s Recreational Waters Program in Baldwin Park. Renovation plans need its approval before building, plumbing, or electrical permits are issued, and an approval stays good for two years.

Public pools follow the health agency’s approved finish rules, so we do not offer custom colors on hotel, apartment, or HOA pools. The program also asks for a pre-plaster inspection, booked at least five days ahead, before the final surface goes on. Drain covers must come from its approved list, which is where VGBA compliance upgrades come in.

The water that refills your pool

LADWP water in Bel Air runs low in calcium

LADWP lists Bel Air Estates and Beverly Glen in its Western Los Angeles area, supplied by the Los Angeles Aqueduct and the Metropolitan Water District’s State Water Project. In its 2025 report, the filtered aqueduct water that serves this area averaged 103 mg/L of hardness, with calcium at about 27 mg/L.

That is soft-leaning water for a pool. Water short on calcium tends to pull it from cement-based plaster, which is one reason an old plaster pool here can etch and turn rough even when it looks well kept. A fiberglass interior has no calcium to give up.

After a refill, test calcium hardness along with the usual chemistry before the first swim, and keep testing as evaporation and top-offs change it over the season.
