Pool Resurfacing in Santa Paula, CA

Aqua Creations provides pool resurfacing in Santa Paula from our Ventura shop, about 11 miles west, and our own crews do every job. City tap water here is some of the hardest in the county, so the finish you choose has to handle scale year after year.

Where we work

From Main Street to the foothills

Santa Paula is a straight run up Highway 126 from our shop. We work in the older blocks around downtown Main Street, along Harvard Boulevard, in the newer homes at the east end of town, and up the foothill roads where orchards meet the backyard fence. Highway 150 leads north out of town toward the Ojai Valley.

The town is part of our Ventura County service area. If you know someone farther along the river valley or over the hill, we also cover these nearby towns:

Valley climate

Milder than Ojai, hotter than the coast

Santa Paula sits in the Santa Clara River Valley, inland of Ventura. Summers here run warmer than on the coast but stay milder than in Ojai.

The normal August high is 82°F and the normal January low is 41°F. About 18 inches of rain falls in a typical year, almost all of it from November through March, with July close to zero. That means a long, dry season of steady sun, warm water, and frequent top-offs.

On a pool interior, the dry months do most of the damage. Water lost to evaporation is replaced with city water at about 32 grains per gallon of hardness, so minerals pile up season after season. Heat speeds the reactions that turn those minerals into scale, and UV keeps pulling chlorine down, which tempts owners into heavier chemical doses that etch plaster.

Climate figures: NOAA 1971 to 2000 normals, Santa Paula station (COOP 047957). NOAA has not published 1991 to 2020 normals for this station.

  • Long dry seasonSeven months with under an inch of rain. Evaporation is the main reason the pool needs topping off.
  • Dust and offshore windDry wind days carry dust, leaves, and orchard debris into pools, which stains rough plaster and clouds water.
  • Winter stormsMost rain falls from December to March. Runoff into the pool throws chemistry off and is worth planning around if the shell will be drained.

The City of Santa Paula serves groundwater from five wells, with treatment for iron and manganese. Its latest report on the state drinking water portal puts average hardness at 551 mg/L for 2023, which works out to about 32 grains per gallon.

Hard water does not ruin a pool overnight. It works slowly, leaving calcium behind every time water evaporates, and the surface decides how much of it sticks.

On plasterPlaster is porous and cement-based. Scale locks into the pores and rough spots, turns the finish gray and crusty, and often has to be cut back with acid, which wears the plaster further.
On fiberglassA smooth, nonporous surface gives scale little to grip. Deposits tend to sit on top, where regular brushing and balanced water keep them under control. See fiberglass pool resurfacing.

In a customer's words

In a customer's words

Here is how one customer described our crew. The work behind it is the same on every pool we resurface.

“Very professional crew. It was obvious they know what they are doing. The attention to detail through the whole process was appreciated.”

Permits and public pools

Who signs off on a Santa Paula resurfacing project

For public pools, the Ventura County Environmental Health Division runs the permit, not the city. Its program covers pools at HOAs, apartments, hotels, parks, schools, and gyms, and any pool that serves more than three families.

Plans before work starts

The county's resurfacing and alteration worksheet goes in with an Application for Permit to Construct and a top-view drawing of the pool. Work does not begin until the plans are approved and the permit is issued.

White interior finish

Public pool interiors must be white, with contrasting color allowed only on step and bench edges, lane lines, and waterline tile. Public pools follow the health agency’s approved finish rules, so we do not offer custom colors on hotel, apartment, or HOA pools.

Drain covers and suction outlets

Main drains and suction outlets need covers that meet ANSI/APSP-16, with model numbers listed for any new covers. Our VGBA compliance upgrades page explains this work.

Tile lines and depth markers

Contrasting waterline tile, a contrasting tile line across the floor at 4½ feet of depth, and depth markers at set spacing are all on the worksheet.

A private backyard pool is outside the county public pool program. If your project adds new plumbing, electrical, or deck work, ask us at the estimate whether the city building office needs to see it. Source: Ventura County public pool resurfacing worksheet.
