Residential Pool Resurfacing for Worn Plaster Pools

Residential pool resurfacing from Aqua Creations replaces a rough, stained plaster surface with AQUA-GLASS™, a gun-laminated fiberglass finish applied by our own crews. We have resurfaced backyard pools across Southern California since 1991, and we never hand the work to subcontractors.

Two signs homeowners notice first

Most backyard pools we see are plaster, often 20 to 30 years old and replastered at least once. Plaster starts wearing the day the pool is filled, and these two signs usually mean it is done.

The floor feels rough

When feet and swimsuits catch on the floor and steps, the smooth top layer of the plaster has worn away, and the kids are the first to say so.

You are on the second or third replaster

If the pool has already been replastered, another replaster starts the same cycle again. This is when most homeowners call us.

What homeowners want to know before they sign

Why does it cost more than a replaster?

A replaster puts down another layer of the material that just wore out. AQUA-GLASS™ takes more preparation and more material. The fair comparison is how many times you expect to pay for a surface over the years you plan to stay in the home. Our article on fiberglass vs. plaster walks through it, and How Much Does Pool Resurfacing Cost in 2026? covers typical ranges.

What changes once the pool is back?

The floor and steps are the first thing you notice: smooth where the old plaster was rough. AQUA-GLASS™ is a smooth, non-porous surface, so stains and algae have less to hold on to than they do on worn plaster.

Who will be working in my backyard?

Aqua Creations employees, never subcontractors. The company has more than 25 long-term employees, and the people resurfacing your pool work for us, not for a crew we hired that week.

What the project looks like

From the estimate to swimming again

For most families the question is not chemistry, it is what the next few weeks look like in the backyard. Here is what happens in the backyard, phase by phase.

Have a spa attached to the pool? It is usually done in the same project. See spa resurfacing for what that involves.

  1. Free estimate

We look at the pool, answer your questions, and go over finish colors with you. Tell us the dates you need the pool back.

  2. Drain-down

The pool is drained so the whole shell can be seen, including cracks and hollow spots the water was hiding.

  3. Resurfacing

Our crews prepare the old plaster and apply AQUA-GLASS™, chopper-gun-laminated fiberglass over a vinyl ester barrier coat. The method is explained on our fiberglass pool resurfacing page.

  4. Refill

The pool is refilled and ready for the family again.

Before your estimate

What to have in mind when we visit

An estimate visit gives you firmer answers when a few things are settled first. None of this is required; it just makes the conversation shorter.

The estimate itself is free and carries no obligation, and financing is available for qualified homeowners.

  1. Find out roughly when the pool was last plastered or resurfaced.
  2. Note the problem spots: rough steps, stains, chips, or hollow areas.
  3. Decide whether waterline tile or coping should be replaced at the same time.
  4. Mention any attached spa so it can be quoted with the pool.
  5. Write down the dates you need the pool back, such as a graduation or summer visitors.
  6. Ask about financing if you would like to spread the cost.

Questions

Residential pool resurfacing questions

Short answers to what homeowners ask us most. Anything else, ask at the estimate.

How long does residential pool resurfacing last?

AQUA-GLASS™ was developed with one goal: the most user-friendly, longest-lasting pool surface we could build. How long any finish lasts still depends on water chemistry and care, which is true of every residential pool resurfacing system.

Can I change the color of my pool?

Yes. AQUA-GLASS™ comes in custom colors, from White and Aqua Pacific Blue to darker shades such as Iridium and Granite. Color reads differently with water depth and sun, so we go over finish colors with you at the estimate.

Will the work wreck my yard?

Homeowners bring it up in their reviews. One wrote that the crew was “very clean and obviously knew what they were doing.” Point out plants, lighting, or features you care about when we visit.

Do you resurface older pools and unusual shapes?

Yes. Most of the residential pools we resurface are 20 to 30 years old, and many have been replastered before. Freeform shapes, benches, and wide entry steps are routine residential pool resurfacing work for our crews.

Do you come to my area?

Our shop is in Ventura, and our crews resurface backyard pools across Southern California and the Central Coast. Check the areas we serve for your town; the estimate is free wherever you are.
