Inland surface conditions

Hot afternoons, cold nights, and a pool in between

NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals for the Paso Robles airport put the normal high above 88°F in every month from June through September, topping out at 94.0°F in August. The nights stay cool. The August normal low is 53.2°F, a swing of about 41 degrees between afternoon and dawn.

Summer heat pulls water out of a pool, and each top-off with hard city water leaves a little more calcium behind. Warm water also burns through chlorine faster, so the chemistry swings wider through the hot months, and those swings are what slowly wear down a cement-based plaster surface.

Winter runs the other way. December and January normal lows sit between 33 and 35°F, close to freezing on the coldest nights.

Where we work

Both sides of 101, from downtown out along Highway 46

US 101 runs north and south through Paso Robles, and Highway 46 heads east out of town past the airport. We work on both sides of the freeway, from the blocks around downtown and 12th Street to the newer tracts and rural properties east and west of the city.

The trip is about 155 miles from our Ventura shop by road, a little over three hours. Homeowners can see how a backyard project runs on our residential pool resurfacing page.

Paso Robles questions

What Paso Robles pool owners ask us first

Distance, water, heat, and permits, answered for the north end of the county.

Pool resurfacing in Paso Robles starts with knowing the fill water. The city’s 2025 water quality report lists total hardness at an average of 15.63 grains per gallon, with a range of 8.2 to 28.7. The city blends water from 19 wells with treated Lake Nacimiento water, which is part of why the number moves around.

Heat on its own does not rule out a project. Normal highs at the Paso Robles airport top 88°F from June through September, and that is also when families want to swim. We talk through timing for your pool at the estimate.

Yes. Public pools in the county go through San Luis Obispo County Environmental Health Services, and plans must be approved before work begins. The finish on a public pool has to be white. Board members can read more on HOA pool resurfacing.

Draining comes first, so tell us at the estimate where water can be sent on your property.

Yes. Spas take the same AQUA-GLASS™ fiberglass finish, and doing both while the pool is empty keeps it to one project. Details are on our spa resurfacing page.

Local wear signs

Four signs a Paso Robles pool surface is wearing out

August at the Paso Robles airport averages a 94°F high and a 53°F low, and the city’s water is hard. Those two facts show up on a pool interior in predictable ways.

  • A white line at the waterline

Hard fill water and summer evaporation leave calcium behind, and it builds up as a crust along the tile line.

  • Rough steps and benches

Warm water means more chlorine and wider chemistry swings, which slowly etch a plaster surface until it feels like sandpaper.

  • Color that fades unevenly

The clearer part of the year runs from early May to the start of November, and months of strong sun wash out tinted plaster in patches.

  • Spots that sound hollow

Plaster that has let go of the shell sounds dull when tapped and often cracks or flakes before it falls away.

Your fill water

Paso Robles water: wells, Lake Nacimiento, and about 15.6 grains of hardness

The City of Paso Robles serves its customers from 19 wells and from Lake Nacimiento surface water treated at the city’s plant. The city says the Salinas River corridor wells supply more than half of its water in a normal year, with Nacimiento water and the Paso Robles groundwater basin making up the rest.

The 2025 report lists total hardness at an average of 15.63 grains per gallon, about 267 mg/L, and a range from 8.2 to 28.7. Calcium averaged 63.93 ppm and total dissolved solids 423.7 ppm.

That is hard water. On plaster it settles into the pores as scale and dulls the surface. A smooth fiberglass face gives scale less to grip, and our fiberglass pool resurfacing page explains why. The water still needs balancing on any finish.
