Pool Resurfacing in Pismo Beach, CA, for Backyards and Resorts by the Ocean
Aqua Creations brings pool resurfacing to Pismo Beach homes, hotels, and resorts, about 115 miles up the coast from our Ventura shop. We have already worked here: the AQUA-GLASS™ finish on the resort lap pool at Dolphin Bay is ours.
Most Pismo Beach homes went up between 1970 and 1999
As of the city’s 2020 draft housing element, 58 percent of Pismo Beach homes were built from 1970 through 1999, 74 percent were more than 30 years old, and 32 percent were past 50. Many backyard pools went in with those houses.
Plaster from that era tends to show its years the same way. The surface turns rough where feet and hands land, the color goes blotchy, and scale and stains settle into the pores. Patches from past repairs rarely match. Once the surface is porous, chemistry gets harder to hold and each season adds a little more wear.
That is why an aging plaster pool usually calls for a full resurface rather than another patch. Our residential pool resurfacing page covers what changes for a backyard pool.

A Pismo Beach resort pool, and the work behind a finish

Hotels and resorts have their own concerns about closure and guests. Our hotel and resort pool resurfacing page covers them.
Pismo Beach, along US 101 on the San Luis Obispo County coast
From Shell Beach to Pismo Oaks
US 101 runs the length of town, and we cover the neighborhoods on either side of it: Shell Beach and Sunset Palisades on the bluffs, Pismo Heights above downtown, and Pismo Oaks on the inland side. Hotels in the Motel District and along the beachfront blocks are on the list too.
Next door inland, about 4 miles off, we also cover Arroyo Grande. About 40 miles north on 101, Paso Robles brings a hotter climate and different water. The rest of our coverage is on the San Luis Obispo County page.
Salt air and a cloudy half-year
A pool a few blocks from the surf lives in damp, salty air. Salt from the ocean settles on the deck and coping and finds its way into the water, and it is hard on anything metal in or around the pool: rails, ladders, light rings, and fasteners.
WeatherSpark’s averages for Pismo Beach show the other half of the picture. The cloudier part of the year runs about six months, from the end of October into early May. Summer stays mild, with highs that peak around 76°F in September.
None of that is hard on a pool in a single season. Over 20 or 30 years on a porous plaster surface, it adds up to the rough, stained finish that leads to a resurface.
- Cloudier half-yearAbout October 31 to May 7
- Warm seasonAbout June 30 to October 24, highs above 74°F

The county path for resurfacing a Pismo Beach public pool
Pismo Beach has a lot of pools that serve guests and residents rather than one family. Resurfacing one of them runs through San Luis Obispo County Environmental Health Services. The county sets the steps below.
Apply
The pool owner or operator files the county application for resurfacing or renovation of an existing public pool. The fee is due with it.
Plan approval
Plans must be approved before construction begins.
Inspection and permit
A remodeled public pool cannot reopen until an inspector approves it and it holds a valid Health Permit to Operate.
The county requires a white finish on public pools, so hotels and HOAs get AQUA-GLASS™ in white. More on shared and commercial work is on our commercial pool resurfacing page. Source: SLO County public pool construction permitting.
How each finish handles a pool by the coast
Switch between the two finishes to see how each one deals with the same four Pismo Beach conditions. Both are fair choices, and we do both.
AQUA-GLASS™ is fiberglass laminated with chopper guns over a vinyl ester barrier coat. The fiberglass pool resurfacing page explains the method.
AQUA-GLASS™ fiberglass
- Salt and spray in the waterA non-cement face that balanced water does not etch the way it etches plaster
- Hard Lopez fill waterA smooth surface gives scale less to grip
- A 1970s to 1990s shellThe laminate is built up over the shell once hollow spots are repaired
- Hotel and HOA poolsAQUA-GLASS™ in white meets the same rule
Plaster
- Salt and spray in the waterAn etched cement surface has pores for salt, scale, and stains to settle into
- Hard Lopez fill waterCalcium crust builds at the waterline and in rough patches
- A 1970s to 1990s shellA fresh plaster coat goes on once the worn layer is removed
- Hotel and HOA poolsWhite plaster meets the county finish rule
