Why AQUA-GLASS™ Performs Differently

Aug 17, 2026 | Pool Resurfacing Insights

When it comes to pool resurfacing, the finished surface is only part of the story.

Two pools can look beautiful immediately after resurfacing, but how those surfaces perform five, ten, or even fifteen years later can be very different. Materials matter, but so do surface preparation, application methods, curing, installation experience, and attention to detail.

That philosophy has shaped Aqua Creations for more than 35 years.

When Richard Dietz Sr. introduced Aqua-Glass™ fiberglass resurfacing to the Southern California market in 1991, his goal was to develop a pool surface that was user-friendly, durable, and built for long-term performance.

Over the decades, Aqua Creations has continued to refine that process. Today, our proprietary AQUA-GLASS™ system isn’t simply about applying fiberglass to a pool. It’s a comprehensive resurfacing system built around preparation, technology, materials, and experienced installation.

So, what makes AQUA-GLASS™ perform differently?

It Starts With What’s Underneath

One of the most important parts of resurfacing happens before the new surface is ever applied.

A new finish can only perform as well as the surface beneath it. That’s why preparation plays such a critical role in the AQUA-GLASS™ process.

Before laminating a pool, our team disk-grinds the existing surface and addresses loose or hollow plaster areas. This creates the foundation necessary for the new system to properly bond to the existing pool.

It’s work homeowners may never see once the pool is filled, but it’s one of the most important steps in creating a resurfaced pool designed for long-term performance.

A Better Approach to Bonding

One of the challenges with fiberglass resurfacing is creating a strong bond between the existing pool surface and the new fiberglass system.

Aqua Creations developed a bonding barrier coating to address that challenge.

Introduced in 1994, our process uses an unfilled, non-pigmented vinyl ester barrier coat applied directly to the prepared substrate. This additional step is designed to improve chemical adhesion and durability between the existing surface and the AQUA-GLASS™ system.

Rather than treating resurfacing as simply covering an old surface with a new one, our process considers how each layer works together.

More Material. More Structural Strength.

How fiberglass is applied matters, too.

Some traditional fiberglass resurfacing methods rely on materials applied manually using buckets and rollers. Aqua Creations takes a different approach.

We use advanced fiberglass chopper guns during application, allowing our technicians to apply approximately 30% more material. This gun-lamination process adds structural strength while creating a thicker finish coat and a stronger water-tight barrier.

The goal isn’t simply to create a pool that looks new.

It’s to create a resurfaced pool built to perform.

Our Six-Stage Application Standard

Over decades of working with fiberglass technology, Aqua Creations developed a six-stage application standard for AQUA-GLASS™.

Fiberglass is a polymer composite system, which means factors such as material consistency, environmental conditions, catalyst ratios, surface temperature, and curing all affect the finished product.

Our materials are pH stable, mixed to a high-shear consistency, and tested for cure when the application is complete.

That level of control helps us achieve the consistent finish and long-term durability AQUA-GLASS™ is known for.

A Smooth, Non-Porous Surface

Performance isn’t only measured in years. It’s also something pool owners experience every time they use or maintain their pool.

AQUA-GLASS™ creates a silky smooth surface that’s comfortable underfoot. Its non-porous characteristics also help resist algae and staining, making the surface more service-friendly and easier to maintain.

The system is designed to require fewer chemicals and can help retain heat, providing benefits that go beyond appearance alone.

For homeowners, that can mean a pool that’s more enjoyable to use and easier to care for.

For commercial properties and pool service professionals, easier maintenance can be especially valuable in high-use environments.

Color Is Part of the Technology

Pool color may seem purely aesthetic, but achieving a consistent fiberglass finish requires technical precision.

Aqua Creations offers AQUA-GLASS™ in a variety of custom colors. To help address common issues such as fading and inconsistent curing, our process accounts for factors including the surfacing agent, catalyst ratio, and surface temperature during installation.

The result is a finish designed to provide both the appearance and performance our customers expect.

Installed by People Who Know the System

Even the best resurfacing technology depends on proper installation.

AQUA-GLASS™ resurfacing is completed by Aqua Creations’ factory-trained technicians, and we do not subcontract our AQUA-GLASS™ resurfacing work.

That distinction matters.

Our crews understand the materials, application process, environmental considerations, and quality standards behind the system they’re installing. Keeping that expertise within our own team allows us to maintain greater consistency from one project to the next.

Built for Residential and Commercial Pools

AQUA-GLASS™ isn’t limited to backyard swimming pools.

Over the years, Aqua Creations has resurfaced residential pools as well as pools and spas for commercial properties throughout Southern California.

The system offers several advantages for both applications, including:

  • A silky smooth finish
  • Easy, service-friendly maintenance
  • Greater strength than traditional plaster
  • Reduced chemical requirements
  • Heat-retaining properties
  • Resistance to algae and staining
  • A longer life expectancy than traditional plaster surfaces
  • Custom color options
  • Installation by factory-trained technicians

AQUA-GLASS™ is also supported by a 15-year pool material warranty and a 10-year commercial spa warranty.

More Than 35 Years of Refinement

AQUA-GLASS™ didn’t become what it is overnight.

Since 1991, Aqua Creations has continued to develop and refine its approach to fiberglass pool resurfacing. From 1996 through 2008, Aqua Creations was recognized at the Western Pool & Spa Show with the Best Alternative Surfacing award.

But awards aren’t ultimately how we measure the success of our work.

It’s the pools still being enjoyed years after installation. It’s the customers who call us again. It’s the property managers and industry professionals who continue to trust our team. And it’s knowing that the process behind every AQUA-GLASS™ installation has been developed through decades of hands-on experience.

The Difference Is in the Process

It’s easy to look at a newly resurfaced pool and focus on the color or the shine.

We look deeper.

We think about the preparation beneath the surface. The strength of the bond. The amount of material applied. The environmental conditions during installation. The curing process. The experience of the technician doing the work.

Those details aren’t always visible when you’re standing beside a finished pool.

But years down the road, they can make all the difference.

That’s why AQUA-GLASS™ performs differently.
