At Aqua Creations, we understand how challenging it can be to choose the right contractor for your swimming pool or spa resurfacing project. Whether you’re deciding between fiberglass or plaster, the most important factor in your decision should be trust. You need to feel confident that your contractor is honest, experienced, and qualified.
But how do you know if your contractor is truly honest? Here are some simple questions to help you evaluate them.
1. How long has the company been in business?
One key way to determine a contractor’s honesty is to verify how long they’ve been in business. Their contractor’s license should correspond with the number of years they’ve been in operation. For instance, if they claim to have been in business for 10 years, the contractor’s license should reflect that (within 6 months). A 10-year-old license should begin with a “7” and have five numbers after it. A one-year-old license will start with an “8.”
Be cautious of contractors who stretch the truth about their license. In California, licenses consist of six digits, and any discrepancy might indicate dishonesty.
2. Is the contractor licensed to perform the work?
It’s essential to confirm whether the contractor is properly licensed to do the work they propose. Contractor licenses are divided into categories. For example, at Aqua Creations, we are licensed under the C-53 category for swimming pools. This allows us to work on pools and spas, including surrounding deck areas. However, we cannot remodel a kitchen or any unrelated project, as it’s outside our expertise and license.
If a contractor isn’t licensed for the specific work, they may not be qualified to complete the job. Always verify that the contractor is licensed for the exact type of work you need, and beware of those who may subcontract work they aren’t qualified for.
3. How did you hear about the contractor?
Word-of-mouth remains one of the best ways to find a trustworthy contractor. If a friend or professional in the industry refers you to someone, that’s often a good sign. But don’t stop there—ask for references, particularly from past clients whose projects were completed at least five years ago. This will give you insight into the longevity and quality of the contractor’s work.
4. Check with the Contractors’ Licensing Board
It’s always a good idea to double-check your contractor’s credentials with the California Contractors’ Licensing Board. You can reach them at 800-321-2752 or visit their website at www2.cslb.ca.gov.
5. Get clear, comparable quotes
When comparing quotes, ensure you’re getting an apples-to-apples comparison. Especially when it comes to fiberglass pool resurfacing, the quality of materials and the processes used can vary widely.
Some systems are low-tech and require minimal training, while others, like the five-stage chopper-gun lamination process we use at Aqua Creations, demand expertise and sophisticated equipment. This process includes a bonding coat, a three-stage laminating coat, and a finish coat, ensuring durability and longevity. The federal government and many local municipalities often specify this method due to its superior quality.
It’s important to ask contractors about the exact materials and processes they use, so you can make an informed decision based on the quality and value being offered.
Trust and Expertise Matter
When it comes to resurfacing your swimming pool or spa, trust is essential. Asking the right questions can help you determine if a contractor is honest, qualified, and capable of delivering high-quality results. At Aqua Creations, we pride ourselves on our integrity, expertise, and dedication to excellence.
